Suzy's Curtain Call

Suzy’s Curtain Call is an interactive Flash piece that explores how we make judgments about other people. We join Suzy as she wakes up aboard a small boat with a mysterious stranger, who shows Suzy different scenes from her memories. During the course of the piece, the user has to judge these flashbacks on Suzy’s life, and decide if they were “Naughty” or “Nice.” At the end, these small choices are tallied and determine Suzy’s fate.

My Role: My role in the project was to program and assemble the piece using Flash, as well as record and mix the dialog. I completed all the Actionscript 3.0 code that drives the project myself, and used Adobe Soundbooth to edit and mix the audio.

Over the course of development, my team and I had many discussions about which actions Suzy could do that could be seen as either positive or negative, depending on the order in which they’re seen and the user’s own personal influences. During one instance the team couldn’t decide if one plot point in particular was a good or a bad thing. It was then that we realized that such ambiguity was our goal, and that we were on the right track.
